Choosing a manual wheelchair used to be a fairly easy thing. There were two or three sizes and styles from one or two manufacturers. In the last 20 years or so there have been many advances in design in an effort to accommodate the needs of many different types of wheelchair users. While these advances have been of great benefit to wheelchair users, they have made choosing a wheelchair for purchase much more daunting.
Where there used to be a couple of companies making wheelchairs, today there are 3 or 4 major manufacturers of manual wheelchairs and quite a few smaller wheelchair manufacturers. Where there used to be a couple of models, now there are many models of wheelchairs in several categories. Knowing what's available and the benefits of the different categories is important to making an informed decision when purchasing.
There are about nine categories of manual wheelchairs available on the market today (excluding specialized sports wheelchairs) and the links below will take you to eight informational pages devoted to each of these categories.
