Wheelchair back supports provide comfort, stability and support for the user and provide a mounting base for accessories such as lateral supports, headrests, harnesses etc. Many wheelchair users do not need back supports but there is a fairly large segment that can benefit from them. At the lower end of the scale a back support can be a simple pad which supports the lumbar area of the spine to provide comfort and promote proper hip alignment and support the lower spine when sitting.
There are several different types of back and spinal conditions that can be addressed by wheelchair back supports in addition to simply aiding the user's balance and stability. Each of these conditions require a different type of back support and accessories but all can be dealt with with a fair amount of success.
The most common spinal conditions that need to be addressed are spinal curves such as:

Regardless of the type of spinal deformity the user may have, one has to know whether their condition is fixed or flexible before a decision on a back support can be made.
A fixed deformity can only be accommodated and the back support has to be assembled to fit the deformity.
A non-fixed or flexible deformity on the other hand can often be corrected while seated in the wheelchair with a proper fitting back support. Advice of a medical professional on whether to try and correct the deformity, or how much correction should be attempted, needs to be sought prior to or during the selection of the back support system.
