Wheelchair Cushions

Wheelchair cushions, while not necessarily a requirement for mobility, are extremely important to the ability of the user to sit comfortably and safely for the time spans required for them to use their wheelchair on a daily basis.

There are several different levels of wheelchair cushions on the market today ranging from low cost comfort cushions to fairly expensive pressure relief cushions. The higher the needs of the user, the more expensive a wheelchair cushion they will need, and the more important it will be they actually try a cushion out prior to purchasing.

The primary purpose of a wheelchair cushion is to provide comfort by reducing and dispersing pressure, providing stability and aiding in positioning. In order to disperse the pressure on a user's bottom, the cushion needs to be soft enough to mould itself to the shape of the user while still being stiff enough to prevent the user from sinking right through the cushion and bottoming out. The number one concern when deciding on a wheelchair cushion will be reducing pressure in order to prevent pressure sores followed by providing stability and positioning.

People who can shift their weight, have feeling in their buttocks or don't spend much time sitting in their wheelchairs can usually get away with low cost basic comfort cushions. People who can't shift their weight, don't have feeling or spends hours at a time in their wheelchairs need to look at more expensive cushions to prevent injury to their skin from pressure sores.
